GOSS THERE'S JUST SO MUCH A HEART CAN TAKE

Ever since debut single ‘I Want To Know????’, Goss has been pitted as one of Denmark’s most promising emerging acts and with each release he confirms these initial expectations. Goss has appeared several times here at TMR, with his off-kilter pop songs ‘Waterfall’, ‘Time’ and ‘Ijotwiyda’. His latest single ‘There’s Just So Much A Heart Can Take’ is one of his most personal compositions to date; it’s a mellow track that, despite its melancholic outlook as an almost-break-up song, it’s strangely soothing. The track is largely based on electronic elements, although given a more human nature due to the conversational lyrics, soft finger clips and recording of an out-of-tune piano forte. Each sound has been selected purposefully, as this song “is about having a really deep relation that is 50% based on the internet,” inspired directly by Goss’ own relationship with his girlfriend who are not often in the same country. The balance we hear between digital and analog reflects this couple’s part-virtual existence, the discordant piano illustrating how communication can falter, and the deeply intimate words 'I’m just an email you’re reading' and 'I’m a picture I’m posting' portrays disconnection. As the Danish songwriter and producer goes on to explain: “Somehow songs like this one have become some kind of self-medication to me. I miss her a lot. And writing songs about it help me process that feeling. It makes it easier. I am kind of writing break up songs without paying the price of actually breaking up. Which is a huge luxury.” As we’re all well aware, the Internet plays a huge role in modern day relationships, and so whether your amour or crush lives on the other side of the world or down the road, you’ll find moments of relatability in Goss’ ‘There’s Just So Much A Heart Can Take’, which is set to feature on the upcoming Homeland Security EP. - Hannah Thacker
